A DAY OF PREHISTORIC FUN IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR SCHOOL!
Welcome to our Stone Age to Iron Age school workshop, bringing the history of the three periods of the Stone Age as well as the Bronze and Iron Ages alive in your primary school with a series of fun and exciting activities.
From the final steps of the evolution of Homo Sapiens and the use of primitive stone hand axes, right through to refined Bronze and Iron Age tools and settlements, your pupils are introduced to a range of genuine and replica artefacts to inform and inspire their learning about the topic in a truly hands on approach. But that's not all, for the workshop also includes Stone Age target practice with spears and bow and arrows (all soft and very safe :) and the opportunity for pupils to have their picture taken with life-size projections of ancient beasts!
HANDLE AND SORT REAL STONE, BRONZE AND IRON AGE ARTEFACTS!
In this task pupils learn about and handle a range of real and replica artefacts, including highlights such as teeth and bones from real Stone Age animals such as cave bears; real flint hand axes; and highly detailed replicas such as red deer antler tools, spears and arrows.
This is then followed by a group sorting session, where pupils uncover, weigh, count and measure four different sets of genuine Stone Age and BronzeAge items such as bronze Celtic ring money, flint arrowheads and much more.
HUNT MAMMOTHS WITH ARROWS AND SPEARS!
A key part of Stone Age survival was the development of reliable hunting skills. This task brings home both those skills and the difficulty that Stone Age people encountered when hunting, by putting the pupils in the footsteps of Stone Age hunters with (safe to use) bow and arrow and spears.
Using either our hand-made replica of a prehistoric bow or our soft-tipped spears, in this task pupils pair up to see who is the best pair of Neolithic hunters. Who can hit the mammoth or the sabre tooth targets for maximum points?
STAND BESIDE STONE AGE BEASTS!
One of the most striking features of Stone Age beasts was their sheer size, which is hard to imagine. This is brought to life in this activity when you are free to take your pupils’ pictures dressed as Stone Age hunters alongside life-sized projections of sabre tooth tigers, woolly rhinos, cave bears, cave lions and even a mammoth skull. This is a great fun task that really imparts a sense of scale when it came to Stone Age hunting expeditions, and what is more, all the furs are fake so not a single mammoth will be harmed in the making of your prehistoric selfie :).
