CHILDREN’S CONCERTS – aimed at 5-12 year olds

The CLASSIC BUSKERS’ children’s programme of classical music without the boring bits has been performed throughout the world, in schools, theatres and concert halls, and is guaranteed to hold the children’s attention, with lots of colourful instruments and props to see and hear, and audience participation.  Their children’s concert lasts approximately 60 minutes, with time for questions.

The programme starts with Mozart's lively Rondo alla Turca played on the recorder. This leads to a demonstration of all the sizes of recorder from the tiniest "bonsai" to the impressive great bass recorder, including the Buskers’ own arrangement of Chopin's Minute Waltz, complete with clock.

Following the recorders, the Buskers turn to the Flutes - on piccolo the finale of "Carnival of the animals", complete with a variety of fun animal noises. The children are asked to identify the beast and then make the noise themselves. More participation is involved in the "Valse des Fleurs" on flute, which has the children joining in singing a little flute phrase, and then a Russian folk tune has them clapping in time as it accelerates.

More instruments are then introduced with a Renaissance work on a cowhorn, followed by Rossini’s Cats' Duet on crumhorn.  Romanian panpipe music is then performed, followed by a chance for some of the children to try the panpipe themselves.

Ocarinas of various shapes and sizes (including a double elephant ocarina!) are followed by the famous American march "Stars and Stripes" with special socks and a patriotic kazoo. If there is a keyboard available, accordionist Ian Moore has a very neat trick whereby he will play Bach on it backwards!

The electric saxophone playing Satie gives the audience a chance to make harp noises to accompany the Buskers, and a high energy Bolivian work leads to Andean rhythms and cries, complete with authentic props. The concert concludes, after questions and answers, with a wonderful finale involving Wagner‘s Ride of the Valkyries in costume.

Technical note: It is useful, although not essential, for a piano to be available for children’s concerts.
